@haswez: nice, simple, plain approach. makes sense.

@michi:

sorry to start off with that point. ;-) but as I said, I think that would make many hard decisions easier. I think it's really hard to be an industry leader. To stick to your metaphor: the second prettiest girl might have it easier, because she can only win.

regarding services: I most certainly think that you can contribute considerably, but I'm not sure if there's anything to win in the service space. As you said, openness pays, because the Internet is the service platform of the future.

Liebe Grüße aus dem ebenfalls winterlichen Wien!

ad 1) are you serious?? I just joined the company, and you say that they should accept that they can only lose? :-) but I can see your point, though it is not so much that Nokia 'lost' anything, but rather that Apple invented a whole new market (and Nokia has still not really arrived there). It's like being the prettiest girl in class, and everyone admires you until the day that some even prettier girl shows up. It doesn't mean that you are not pretty anymore :)

ad 2) Motorola dominated the world with RAZR and its clamshell form factor just a few years ago. So, things do change. Fortunately. But, yes of course, point 2 on my list goes also towards an iphone-lookalike.

ad 4+5) well, as you say, Nokia has been able to adapt in the past, and thats why they wont give up on services so quickly. maybe I can even help them a little. I assume I haven't forgotten it all in the past two years :)

and yes, you are right, I am a lucky one to 'end' up as a Data Analyst at Nokia's headquarter, as the subject I am working on is quite close to what I've done at university. Just on a bit larger scale.

i´d consider a three action line approach for nokia:

1) os: maemo
2) portfolio: 3 phone strategy
3) focus: mobile communication

see the complete comment in the discussion section at the original posting by michael platzer:
